Mawson Connector
2005 – 2006
The Mawson Connector is also known as Elder Smith Road and is a new, two-lane connector road between Main North Road and the Salisbury Highway. The Mawson Connector includes an overpass over railway lines, new bicycle lanes and safer pedestrian access to the platforms below.Working with the Department of Transport Energy and Infrastructure DPD designed public street lighting and major road lighting for the Mawson Connector. This included installing lighting under the bridge to ensure pedestrian safety, feature lighting on the bridge and lighting along the central median strip. The development of the Mawson Connector has allowed for a reduction of traffic on surrounding arterial roads, by providing an alternative route to Port Adelaide from Main North Road. Additional access has also been created to connect the Mawson Town Centre, the University of South Australia campus, Technology Park and the Mawson Transport Interchange. The street and road lighting designs by DPD were developed in keeping with the overall aim of the Mawson Connector project; to have a minimal impact on the environment, while allowing for future expansion to cater for increased traffic, as design and construction is achieved more efficiently before an area is heavily populated.
