Coast to Coast – Case Study
Coast to Coast Light Rail Extension, Stage 2
March 2009 – September 2009
The first stage of the plans to connect the Glenelg and Semaphore beaches by tram with a Coast to Coast Light Rail began with the opening of the tram extension from Victoria Square to North Terrace in 2007. The Department of Transport Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI) commenced the second stage of the Coast to Coast Light Rail in 2009 with the help of ETSA Utilities and DPD.The second stage of the Coast to Coast Light Rail is an extension from the City West platform on North Terrace to a new platform in front of the Entertainment Centre on Port Road. DPD has been required to scope, survey and design the alterations and extension of ETSA’s LV, 11 kV and 66 kV overhead and underground power line systems, including the existing street lighting, to make way for the tram line extension. The route of the new tram lines down the middle of Port Road has changed the vehicle movement dynamics to adjacent streets and DPD were involved in designing the alterations to overhead mains and the undergrounding of power lines to accommodate the changes. Street lighting redesign was also undertaken by DPD.During the course of this project, DPD provided the survey and design solutions for the relocation of the 66 kV overhead power line in front of Bonython Park, to allow for the widening of Port Road. The new power lines were also successfully designed to clear the proposed roadway lighting scheme, and the overhead tram line catenary system. DPD also prepared a proposal for underground boring, as the River Torrens has to be crossed with several ETSA HV and LV services, due to the widening of the Hindmarsh Bridge.
